The core content of our approach is mandatory curricula in several Cornell University programs, and for the cadets at West Point. It is also embedded in the strategy, operations, and tactics of the US Army special forces, demonstrating its effectiveness in high-performance environments. Yet this methodology is universal and accessible to primary school-age children.

The Link to Transformed Organizational Performance and Higher-Order Thinking Skills

​Organizational thinking creates a view of potential work activities, guiding both the choices made and methods employed. When Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are introduced, this enhances the view, selection, and execution of work.

Current organizational thinking involves the direct application of education, training, and experience to the work at hand. What is missing, is an awareness of thinking itself (metacognition). Awareness and insight into our thinking is key to high achievement in all domains (as noted by Stephen Fleming).

 

Think about how we map, detail, and validate the interaction between our employees and new technology. Yet, when it comes to the human-to-human interface--understanding how we think, what we are doing when we think, and how we think when we are together--we are surprisingly indifferent. This is precisely where our attention should lie, as improvements in this area can significantly enhance our comprehension, mental acuity, and performance.

Cabrera Research in systems thinking and DSRP has shown our thinking often lacks completeness in some key cognitive elements:

  • Identification (i, identity)

  • Decomposition (p, part)

  • Connections (a, action)

  • Perspective-taking (v, view)

Additionally, our thinking misses crucial but subtle aspects of cognition, that are often hidden from our "view":

  • Boundary judgements (o, other)

  • Contextual zooming (w, whole)

  • Connection mechanisms (r, reaction) 

  • Understanding bias (p, point)

In addition, there are cognitive structural dynamics that if known, can dramatically enhance our comprehension of any situation.

Fortunately, these gaps can be quickly addressed with our practical, universal, and accessible approach. By introducing these concepts, anyone--regardless of background--can significantly elevate their thinking and improve their ability to engage and collaborate. This method can be applied with penetration in a functional group around a critical system, with diffused impact enterprise wide, or with enterprise-wide penetration with transformational impact.
